The main objective of this study was to analyse the economic viability of replacing coal with gas in Bulgaria’s
power plants. The analysis focuses on the current situation in the power production sector in Bulgaria,
particularly coal-fired and gas-fired power plants. It also takes into account the various cost components of
electricity produced from gas, and the expected market prices for the period 2025 to 2040. Thus, this study
can be used to inform decision makers about the potential costs, their sensitivity to input variables,
regulatory factors, and overall investment feasibility.
The scope of the study is confined to the electricity production sector. DH plants are not considered due to
their relatively small share, social role, and the complexity of the related price regulations.
