SHAREs+ is opening a new chapter in the development of energy communities

Co-funded by the European Union’s LIFE programme, the SHAREs+ project supports citizen initiatives in renewable energy in five European countries. Building on the successful model of national information hubs – SHAREs National Gateways – SHAREs+ expands the model to Cyprus, Romania, North Macedonia, and Ukraine, adapting it for new applications.

The project plans to create 13 new energy communities and support 50 existing ones. Its goal is to promote the wider use of renewable energy, increase energy efficiency, and optimize energy production and consumption in the region.

Bulgaria acts as a pioneer in developing an energy community framework and a pilot site for citizens-led thermal renewable project and vulnerable consumer engagement. Austria serves as the primary capacity-building partner.

The kick-off meeting for SHAREs+ took place in Sofia on September 17 and 18, 2025. Partners shared ideas, discussed plans for implementation and marked the start of this ambitious project, which aims to make energy communities more active and effective.
