Contractors:
BSERC, Bulgaria

BSERC was assigned by the Ministry of Energy to perform an analysis of the opportunities for production of next generation biofuels and other RES in the Bulgarian transport sector, to propose an indicative sub-target for the consumption of these biofuels and means for its attainment.

The analysis was divided into two main parts:

  1. State-of-the-art of the Bulgarian biofuels sector – national legislation and implementation of the European regulative framework, overview of sources and information about biofuels consumption of transport sector in EU and Bulgaria. This part contains also information about the conventional and next generation biofuels units installed or under construction, their capacity and certification of produced, imported and exported volumes.
  2. Potential and opportunities for meeting the legislative requirements – this part represents the core of the study and it examines the potential for production of biofuels and the ways to utilize this potential. A proposal is made for setting of a national sub-target for the next generation biofuels consumption in transport sector by 2020 and relevant cost-effective measures for the attainment of that aim.
