Discussion of the possibilities for transition to clean energy in the Stara Zagora Region

On July 2nd, 2020, the Regional Economic Development Agency Stara Zagora (SZEDA) and the Black Sea Energy Research Centre (BSERC) hosted a meeting in Stara Zagora on the prospects for the transition from a high-intensity carbon economy to a future clean energy of the region, part of which constitutes the “Maritsa East” energy complex.

Other countries’ successful experience in the energy transition and the opportunities for implementation of international good practices in our country were presented, as well as the next steps for planning the sustainable development of the region.

The meeting ran in a spirit of a constructive dialogue between the participants, including representatives of “Mini Maritsa East” EAD, TPP AES Galabovo, TPP ContourGlobal Maritsa East 3, the Institute of Energy Management, local authorities, academia, business and trade unions. Mr. Julian Popov from the European Climate Foundation also took part online from London.

The Bulgarian Biotechnology Cluster presented the opportunities for development of the region in the field of biotechnology, which have the potential for job creation and positive GDP by promoting industries with high added value.

The teams of Nucleon Consulting Ltd. and the Institute of Chemical Engineering to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences demonstrated a technology for emissions-free fuel production specifically from coal of the Maritsa basin.

The meeting was organized within the frameworks of the projects DeCarb ( and TRACER. The DeCarb project, in which SZEDA is the leading partner, is funded by INTERREG EUROPE (85%) and the Bulgarian Government (15%). BSERC is the Bulgarian partner in TRACER.
